the friday five

1. Are you going to school this year?

yes! for the first time in over nine years...

2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?

i am going to finally finish my bachelor's degree. or at least that is the goal.

3. What are your favorite school subjects?

i love english, both writing and reading. i also love history, geography, sociology and political science.

4. What are your least favorite school subjects?

math. i developed a mental hang-up with regard to math when i was 7. and, as i am taking math this semester, i'm trying like crazy to undo 23 years worth of mathematical bad attitude. i'm determined to do well.

5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?

luckily, i've had quite a few. my parents are by far, my favorite teachers. my friend, colleen taught me russian for four years in high school. my friend joe, tried to teach me algebra and i think i actually managed to get a b in his class. my sister and new brother-in-law are both teachers, and i like them both a lot.

my life has been filled with many wonderful people, who have happened to be educators of some kind. i even thought i wanted to be a teacher a few years back. but, it is an almost entirely thankless job. completely wonderful, but thankless.

school daze

school comes so early here in georgia. i don't quite understand why, exactly... especially since these are the hottest days of summer, generally.

savannah started pre-k on wallace's birthday, 11 august. we're still working on understanding what weekends are, and why we don't go to school on the weekends. she seems to love it, and she seems to be doing well.

it's been nice having the break, and i'm sure she feels the same way. as they do lots of fun things in pre-k.

i started school on 18 august. and, i'm still really amazed to even be there. i'm taking 16 credits. and, other than being a bit sweaty, stressed and tired at times, i've loved every bit of it.

i am fairly certain i'd like to eventually be a lawyer when i grow up. so, i'm now a political science major. and, i've never been a person to flounder with regard to majors. i was an english/journalism major for a good part of my previous college time. but, it isn't what i'd like to do anymore, necessarily.

the first day of class, first class i had happened to be a poli sci class. also i knew that the professor, had also been designated as my advisor. so, i wanted to find out about this gentleman, before i set up an appointment for advising -- and also, if i wanted to take classes with him.

he strolled down the hall, with a cart full of papers as we were standing outside waiting for him to let us in the classroom. he had a venti starbucks cup in one of his hands, and a pair of well-worn birkenstocks on his feet. i was sure that he was my kind of guy.

the class itself is a current political issues class. and, it is one of the lower division major requirement classes. can i tell you how much i love current political issues? and, as this large african american man, with the bulging eyes and broad smile went on to describe his personal politics as being 'very liberal... maybe somewhere to the left of ghengis khan', i was so happy he was not only my professor this semester, but also my advisor.

there aren't any books for this class. there are 4 newspapers. newpapers and political issues, class discussions and no tests! good gods, it couldn't have been any better.

i am also taking an english literature class i'm fairly certain i will ace. a science class i'm hoping isn't too terribly difficult. a history class that i love so far, and a math class so i can finally get it over with once and for all.

mondays and wednesdays are long days for me. wallace, laid-off once again has been a great help and support to me. he's made dinners for me, and snuggled me when i get home from class.

now, if wallace could find a job (or a lot of freelance in the meantime) my life would be almost perfect.

the funniest part is giving out my e-mail address to classmates for projects and study partners. everyone has either a yahoo address or an aol address. and, i'm trying to explain my domain to people -- they get that glazed-over look, and eventually get it right.

i love being a student again. i have lots to prove, and so much i want to do. this is only the beginning.

thanks for sticking around. hopefully, i won't break my journal again anytime soon.

after weeks of neglecting my journal here, i think i'm back. although, i am going to try again to publish this... and, if it makes it to my site, expect a more comprehensive update shortly.

oh, please work!
